Eastbound to Albuquerque:  On the Road Again

Song inspiration of the day:

On the Road Again (Willie Nelson)

On the road again
Like a band o’ gypsies, we go down the highway
We’re the best of friends
Insisting that the world keep turning our way

It was oh dark hundred and even Las Vegas, a city that never sleeps was snoring.  Not us. Hurry (Jill) wants to beat the traffic, Sloth (Jane) wants sleep.  Hurry won, as she does, and with no coffee shops open for hours Hurry turned SassyFras (her electric car) east and we were on the road again.

It was no surprise that we arrived on-the-early for our first Route 66 stop at Kingman.  The visitor center was closed, the route 66 museums, closed, kitch stores selling route 66 Americana, closed.  But, we hit paydirt — Mudd Coffee Shop – Open!!

Hurry:  “Do you think we’re drinking too much coffee?”

Sloth: “yep, do you think we’re getting up too early?”

“ok, yeah, but…”

“…maybe we wouldn’t need  coffee if we could sleep longer?”

“hm.”

“hm.”

And just like that we non-verbally agreed:  coffee, long days and minimal sleep was necessary to cram in two months of Route 66 & hiking all things west – in less than 3 weeks.  Carry on.

Arizona is oven-dry arid, and its landscape ranges from mountains to mesas to high desert plains.  The Arizona desert has a brown hue to its terrain, as if every species of desert grasses has died.  Then, there are the ranchers who let their ‘desert cattle’ roam free eating brown grass, no water to wash it all down, and now the coffee was making progress.

Sloth: “do you think this is what they mean by grass fed?”

Hurry: “what about organic?”

“yeah, doubt there are any chemicals in the desert…maybe desert organic grass fed”

“what about that meteor crator we saw in the desert, bet there are chemicals there..”

“didn’t see any cattle..”

And just like that we returned to sipping coffee, clearly experiencing a profound level of thought provoking topics one would only contemplate on a road trip amped on caffeine.
